Papers of John Wells. 1893-1920.

The collection includes a handwritten diary 'An outline of John Wells' life'; and family history notes entitled 'The story of John Wells and Betsy Chester, also their ancestors and their descendants' by Margaret Fletcher. These notes include a typescript of Wells' diary. There is a book of hymns written by John Wells, with notations and a photograph; and his bible 'The comprehensive Teachers' Bible', also containing notations.

Margaret Fletcher was born in Victoria, B.C. Her family owned and operated Fletcher Brothers store in Victoria. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.A. in 1930, later studying to be a nurse. She served in the Canadian Army during World War II, at which time she worked in hospitals in Victoria and Nanaimo before being posted to England. From the description of Margaret Fletcher fonds. Salvation Army Officer. John Wells was born in Norfolk, Great Britain, in 1870. He sailed on the 'Quetta' from Gravesend to Townsville, Queensland in 1889, and became committed to the Salvation Army in 1891. Graduating as a Captain in the Salvation Army in 1892, he preached at towns and cities across Victoria before being posted to Tasmania in 1897, where he met and married Betsy Chester, an ensign in the Salvation Army.
